A Prayer After Lighting Candles

After lighting Shabbat candles and reciting the blessing, women traditionally say two personal prayers: for the rebuilding of the Temple, and for their children, family and the Divine Presence in their home.

A Prayer After Lighting Candles

תפילה אחרי הדלקת נרות שבת

Immediately after lighting the candles and reciting the blessing over them, it is customary to say the following two Yehi ratzon prayers: a woman's personal requests to the Creator. In fulfilling the commandment of lighting candles, each woman repairs the wrongdoing of Chavah, the first woman, which “plunged the world into darkness.” By lighting candles, she now brings light and blessing into the world. At this moment, she can therefore ask the Almighty for what she herself and the entire Jewish people need. The first Yehi ratzon asks for the speedy rebuilding of the Temple, for then the world will return to its original perfection and everything else we lack will be restored. The second Yehi ratzon includes requests for the wellbeing of our children and family, and for the Almighty's presence in our home and among the people of Israel.

Each woman may add other prayers in her own words to these two established requests, according to her needs.

May it be Your will, L-rd our G-d and G-d of our fathers, that the Temple be rebuilt speedily in our days, and grant us our portion in Your Torah. There we will serve You in awe, as in days of old and in former years. May the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasing to the L-rd, as in days of old and in former years.

May it be Your will, L-rd my G-d and G-d of my fathers, to have mercy on me (and on my husband (and on my sons and daughters)), and on all my relatives, and to grant us and all the people of Israel a good and long life. Remember us for goodness and blessing, attend to us with salvation and mercy, and cause Your Shechinah to dwell among us. Grant us the merit to raise children and grandchildren who are wise and understanding, who love the L-rd and fear Him, people of truth, holy offspring who cleave to the L-rd, illuminating the world with Torah, good deeds and every form of service to the Creator. Please, hear my supplication in the merit of Sarah and Rivkah, Rachel and Leah, our mothers. Sustain the light of our candle so that it never goes out; shine the light of Your face upon us, and we shall be saved. Amen.

This prayer is taken from the book Sha'arei Dim'ah.

We express our deep gratitude to the translator, Rabbi Alexander Katz, the editor, Rabbi Zvi Wasserman, and the Shvut Ami publishing house for permission to use their Russian translation of the prayers from the collection “I Call to You”.
