The L-rd said to Moses: “I will rain bread from heaven for you. The people shall go out and gather each day what they need for that day, so that I may test whether they follow My instruction or not. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it shall be twice what they gather each day.” Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel: “In the evening you will know that the L-rd brought you out of Egypt, and in the morning you will see the L-rd’s glory, for He has heard your complaints against Him. Who are we, that you complain against us?” Moses said: “When the L-rd gives you meat to eat in the evening and bread to satisfy you in the morning, it is because He has heard the complaints you make against Him. Who are we? Your complaints are not against us, but against the L-rd.” Moses said to Aaron: “Tell the whole congregation of the children of Israel: ‘Come near to the L-rd, for He has heard your complaints.’” As Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, they turned toward the wilderness, and the L-rd’s glory appeared in the cloud. The L-rd spoke to Moses, saying: “I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel. Tell them: ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be satisfied with bread, and you will know that I am the L-rd your G-d.’” In the evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning a layer of dew lay around the camp. When the layer of dew lifted, there was something fine and bare on the wilderness surface, fine as frost upon the ground. The children of Israel saw it and said to one another: “This is man—food,” for they did not know what it was. Moses said to them: “This is the bread the L-rd has given you to eat. This is what the L-rd commanded: ‘Each person shall gather as much as he can eat, one omer per person according to your number. Each of you shall take for those in his tent.’” The children of Israel did so; some gathered much and some little. When they measured with the omer, the one who gathered much had no excess and the one who gathered little had no shortage; each gathered as much as he could eat. Moses told them: “No one shall leave any of it until morning.” But they did not listen to Moses, and some left it until morning. Worms bred in it and it became foul, and Moses was angry with them. They gathered it every morning, each as much as he could eat; when the sun grew hot, it melted. On the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each person. All the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses. He said to them: “This is what the L-rd said: ‘Tomorrow is a day of complete rest, a holy Shabbat for the L-rd. Bake what you wish to bake and cook what you wish to cook. Put aside all that remains to keep until morning.’” They put it aside until morning as Moses commanded; it did not become foul, and there were no worms in it. Moses said: “Eat it today, for today is Shabbat for the L-rd. Today you will not find it in the field. Gather it for six days, but on the seventh day, Shabbat, there will be none.” On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, but found nothing. The L-rd said to Moses: “How long will you refuse to observe My commandments and instructions? See, the L-rd has given you Shabbat; therefore on the sixth day He gives you bread for two days. Each of you shall remain where he is; no one shall leave his place on the seventh day.” The people rested on the seventh day. The house of Israel named it “man.” It was white, like coriander seed, and tasted like a honey cake. Moses said: “This is what the L-rd commanded: ‘A full omer of it shall be kept for your generations, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness when I brought you out of Egypt.’” Moses said to Aaron: “Take a vessel, put a full omer of man in it and place it before the L-rd to be kept for your generations.” As the L-rd commanded Moses, Aaron placed it before the Ark of the Covenant for safekeeping. The children of Israel ate man for forty years, until they reached an inhabited land; they ate man until they came to the border of Canaan. An omer is one tenth of an ephah.
