Going on vacation? Wonderful! HOW do you pack a KOSHER suitcase and make sure you don't forget anything?!
In this video, I share tips on preparing for a trip to a place where there are no kosher shops. The first thing I always recommend is writing a detailed list. Make the effort; when you're getting the whole family ready for a trip, you simply cannot do without a list.
You need to think through more than just clothing and gadgets: food, observing Shabbat, a place to pray, activities for the children, and much more! Write down everything that comes to mind, then organize it. Start packing early!
Contact the Jewish community at your destination and discuss all your questions with the rabbi. Check your passports: getting a new passport can sometimes take a long time, and an expedited passport costs a great deal of money. Don't skimp on medical insurance, especially when traveling with children!
As for packing the suitcase itself, pack your suitcases gradually, without overburdening yourself... or your suitcases! And don't forget to recite Tefillat HaDerech!
My checklist for a family that keeps kosher and is traveling to a non-kosher destination includes the following:
-Essentials -Clothing -Shoes -Accessories: for Mom and the girls, for Dad and the boys, for the baby, study and prayer, Mom's makeup bag -Toiletries -Miscellaneous -First-aid kit -Kitchen supplies -Food -Shabbat essentials -Carry-on luggage -Things to do before leaving home
If you have ideas about what else might come in handy while traveling, I'd love to read your comments!
Have a safe and happy journey!
