Rabbi Yaakov Galinsky
It is said that grandchildren are like children, and the book of Exodus (10:2) explicitly states: “So that you may tell your son and your son's son how I punished Egypt, and about My signs that I performed among them, so that you may know that I am the L-rd!”
Let me tell you something about this: once I visited the great Steipler, and he greeted me joyfully: “Sit down; let me tell you a wonderful chiddush that occurred to me today.
It is related that when Jacob was fleeing from Esau, Eliphaz, Esau's son, pursued him on his father's orders to kill him, and caught up with him.
But because Eliphaz had grown up “under Isaac's wing,” he did not kill Jacob. “What should I do?” he asked Jacob. “How can I carry out my father's order?”
A remarkable stringency—to do anything for the mitzvah of honoring one's father, even commit murder! Then, as we know, Jacob said to him: “Take everything I have. A pauper is considered dead.”
