Prayer after lighting candles

After lighting Shabbat candles and reciting the blessing, women traditionally say two personal prayers: for the rebuilding of the Temple, and for their children, family and the Divine Presence in their home.

Prayer after lighting candles

תפילה אחרי הדלקת נרות שבת

Immediately after lighting the candles and reciting the blessing over them, it is customary to say the following two Yehi ratzon prayers: a woman's personal requests to the Creator. In fulfilling the commandment of lighting candles, each woman repairs the wrongdoing of Chavah, the first woman, which “plunged the world into darkness.” By lighting candles, she now brings light and blessing into the world. At this moment, she can therefore ask the Almighty for what she herself and the entire Jewish people need. The first Yehi ratzon asks for the speedy rebuilding of the Temple, for then the world will return to its original perfection and everything else we lack will be restored. The second Yehi ratzon includes requests for the wellbeing of our children and family, and for the Almighty's presence in our home and among the people of Israel.

Each woman may add other prayers in her own words to these two established requests, according to her needs.

May it be Your will, L-rd our G-d and G-d of our ancestors, that the Temple be rebuilt soon, in our days. Grant us a share in Your Torah, and there we shall serve You with awe, as in ancient days and former years. May the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasing to the L-rd, as in ancient days and former years.

May it be Your will, L-rd my G-d and G-d of my ancestors, to have compassion on me (and on my husband (and on my sons and daughters)), and on all my relatives. Grant us and all the people Israel a good and long life. Remember us favorably and with blessing, grant us salvation and compassion, and let Your Shechinah dwell among us. Grant us the merit of raising children and grandchildren who are wise and understanding, who love and fear the L-rd, people of truth, holy offspring devoted to the L-rd, illuminating the world with Torah, good deeds and every form of service to the Creator. Please hear my supplication through the merit of Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah, our mothers. Sustain the light of our candle, so that it never goes out. Shine upon us with the light of Your face, and we shall be saved. Amen.
