Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech of Dynov: the author of Bnei Yissachar

Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech Shapira of Dynov was born in the late eighteenth century and died in 1841. He was a communal rabbi and Hasidic teacher in Galicia. In Jewish literature he is frequently called the Bnei Yissachar after his best-known work. This is the author from Dynov, not a later member of the Shapira family bearing the same name.

Teachers and communities

His spiritual formation was connected with the Hasidic teachers Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak, the Seer of Lublin, Rabbi Yisrael of Kozhnitz and Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch of Zidichov. He served as rabbi in several communities, including Dynov and Munkács. His writings combine Talmudic and halakhic scholarship with a Hasidic reading of kabbalistic sources.

Jewish time in Bnei Yissachar

Bnei Yissachar is organised around the months of the Jewish year, festivals, Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh. This arrangement invites readers to see the calendar as a sequence of spiritual themes revisited each year. The author examines rabbinic texts, prayer and commandments in relation to the character of each season.

His other books include Agra DeKalla on the Torah, Agra DePirka, a collection of reflections and instruction, and Derekh Pikudekha on the commandments. Library catalogues and surviving editions document these works.

Reading a Hasidic commentary

His books call for a distinction between halakhic discussion, ethical instruction and interpretation in the tradition of sod, the hidden dimension of meaning. A symbolic explanation is not necessarily a literal account of events or a binding rule. Keeping the book title and precise reference helps readers trace the original text, its context and the place of an idea within his teaching.
