Rabbi Yoel Schwartz: biography and books

Rabbi Yoel Schwartz (1939–2022) was a Jerusalem Torah educator and a prolific writer on Jewish tradition. In a 2020 interview, he recalled being born in Jerusalem to parents from Hungary. He studied at Kol Torah, Ponevezh and Mir, naming Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, Rabbi Yosef Kahaneman and Rabbi Eliezer Yehuda Finkel among his teachers.

Making Torah understandable

He taught at Itri, HaNegev and Ofakim, and his publishing work was closely associated with Devar Yerushalayim. Much of his educational work addressed people returning to Jewish observance. His books therefore combine study of traditional sources with explanations of basic concepts and everyday religious life.

His writings cover faith, character, education, festivals, commandments and the individual’s relationship with society. A separate strand explains the seven Noahide commandments for non-Jewish readers.

Books and lectures

The National Library of Israel catalogs his Devar Yerushalayim commentaries on biblical books, including Proverbs, and English works such as A Light unto the Nations and Zion Today. It also preserves recordings of his classes on the Book of Ruth.

His topical bulletin archive ranges from the meaning of festivals and commandments to protecting life and considering contemporary events. When reading an individual article, it is useful to distinguish explanation of a source, ethical teaching and a practical halakhic answer.
