Segulot Against Anger

Anger is one of the most negative character traits. According to our Sages, a person who becomes angry is like an idolater (Shabbat, 105b). It also says in Tractate Nedarim: “Anyone who becomes angry—all forms of Gehinnom hold sway over him.” In a moment of anger, a spirit of foolishness and impurity takes hold of a person, while his Divine soul, by contrast, leaves him.

Below are 4 proven segulot against anger:

  1. Respond "Amen, yehei shmei rabba" with all your strength and with kavanah, asking the Almighty to remove anger from your heart.
  2. The book "Erech Apayim" states: pledge money to tzedakah and pay it immediately.
  3. The word "anger" (ka'as) has the same gematria (numerical value) as the word "kanaf." Therefore, holding the tzitzit strings (kanfei tzitzit) and looking at them is a segulah for removing anger from the heart. As stated in Shemirat HaLashon, looking at the tzitzit strings helps rid oneself of improper thoughts and anger.
  4. Recite the following verses from Psalm 119:

"בַּמֶּה יְזַכֶּה נַּעַר אֶת אָרְחוֹ לִשְׁמֹר כִּדְבָרֶךָ: בְּכָל לִבִּי דְרַשְׁתִּיךָ אַל תַּשְׁגֵּנִי מִמִּצְוֹתֶיךָ:"

"Bameh yezakeh na'ar et orcho lishmor kidvarecha. Bechol libi derash'ticha, al tashgeni mimitzvotecha" (119:9-10)

(Translation: How can a young man find his way? By keeping Your word! With all my heart I have sought You; do not let me stray from Your commandments.)
