The Shlah Hakadosh’s prayer for oneself and one’s descendants

The Shlah Hakadosh’s prayer for oneself and one’s descendants

EnglishHebrewEnglish transliteration

You were the L-rd our G-d before You created the world, and You are our G-d since You created the world; from eternity to eternity You are G-d. You created Your world so that Your divinity would be known through Your holy Torah, as our Sages of blessed memory said: “In the beginning”—for the sake of the Torah and for the sake of Israel. They are Your people and Your inheritance, whom You chose from all nations, to whom You gave Your holy Torah and whom You brought close to Your great Name.
For the continuance of the world and the continuance of the Torah, You, L-rd our G-d, gave us two commandments. In Your Torah You wrote, “Be fruitful and multiply,” and, “You shall teach them to your children.” Both have one purpose: You did not create the world to be empty, but to be inhabited. For Your glory You created, formed and made it, so that we, our descendants and the descendants of all Your people, the house of Israel, should know Your Name and study Your Torah.
Therefore I come before You, L-rd, King of kings, and lay my supplication before You. My eyes are turned to You until You grant me grace and hear my prayer to grant me sons and daughters. May they too be fruitful and multiply, they, their children and their children’s children, to the end of all generations, so that they, I and all of us may occupy ourselves with Your holy Torah: learning and teaching, observing, performing and lovingly fulfilling all the words of the study of Your Torah. Enlighten our eyes in Your Torah, attach our hearts to Your commandments and unite our hearts to love and revere Your Name.
Our Father, compassionate Father, grant us all long and blessed lives. Who is like You, compassionate Father, remembering Your creatures for life in mercy? Remember us for eternal life, as our father Abraham prayed, “May he live before You,” which our Sages of blessed memory explained as “in reverence for You.”
Therefore I have come to ask and plead before You that my descendants and their descendants forever be worthy offspring. May no defect or blemish be found in me, my descendants or their descendants forever, but only peace and truth, goodness and uprightness in the eyes of G-d and in the eyes of people. May they be masters of Torah: masters of Scripture, Mishnah, Talmud, the hidden wisdom, commandments, deeds of lovingkindness and noble qualities. May they serve You with love and inward reverence, rather than outward fear. Provide each person’s needs with dignity; grant them health, honor and strength, stature and beauty, grace and kindness. May fellowship and peace prevail among them. Find them worthy spouses from the descendants of Torah scholars and righteous people, spouses who are like them in everything for which I have prayed on their behalf, for one remembrance rises for both alike.
You, L-rd, know all hidden things, and the secrets of my heart are revealed before You. My intention in all this is for the sake of Your great and holy Name and Your holy Torah. Therefore answer me, L-rd, answer me, for the sake of the holy forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. For their sake, save the children, so that the branches may resemble their roots; and for the sake of David Your servant, the fourth leg of the divine chariot, who sang through Your holy spirit:
“A song of ascents. Happy is everyone who fears the L-rd and walks in His ways. When you eat the labor of your hands, happy are you and good will be yours. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children like olive shoots around your table. Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears the L-rd. May the L-rd bless you from Zion; may you see Jerusalem’s well-being all the days of your life. May you see your children’s children. Peace upon Israel.”
Please, L-rd, who hears prayer, may this verse be fulfilled in me: “As for Me, this is My covenant with them, says the L-rd: My spirit that is upon you and My words that I have placed in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, from the mouth of your descendants or from the mouth of your descendants’ descendants, says the L-rd, from now and forever.”
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before You, L-rd, my Rock and my Redeemer.
