Rabbi Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg: Torah Ore, learning and care for people

The founder and rosh yeshiva of Torah Ore in Jerusalem, halakhic authority and author of Tabaat HaChoshen: his life and teaching.

Rabbi Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg: Torah Ore, learning and care for people

Rabbi Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg (1910–2012) was born in Poland, grew up in New York and later headed Yeshivas Torah Ore in Jerusalem. His life connected the American yeshiva world, pre-war Mir and the Land of Israel. He was a Talmud teacher and a posek, a rabbi consulted on practical questions of Jewish law.

Teachers and his own yeshiva

In America he studied under Rabbi Shlomo Polachek, Rabbi Shimon Shkop and Rabbi Moshe Soloveitchik. After his marriage he continued his education at the Mir yeshiva in Europe. He subsequently founded Torah Ore in New York and moved its activity to Jerusalem in the 1960s. According to the yeshiva’s own history, it was initially housed in the Diskin Orphan Home, before its centre in Kiryat Mattersdorf was developed. In 1971 Scheinberg became the neighbourhood’s dayan and halakhic guide.

Books and teaching

His work Tabaat HaChoshen examines monetary law, discussing Ketzot HaChoshen and Netivot HaMishpat in relation to the Shulchan Arukh. It exemplifies his detailed Talmudic analysis. Its title and subject are documented in the National Library of Israel catalogue.

Another aspect of his legacy is personal guidance of students. Torah Ore’s account links advanced study with building students’ confidence and attending to their development. His biographer, Rabbi Yechiel Spero, who gathered recollections from people who knew him, also describes his warmth and family life.

Approaching his legacy

His own works and carefully recorded rulings provide an introduction to his halakhic thinking. The yeshiva’s history and biographical testimony help readers encounter the person. These different sources complement one another: exacting textual study and concern for people appear as parts of the same teaching life.
