Rosh Chodesh - The Ability to See with Fresh Eyes

While they were still in Egypt, the Almighty gave Israel the commandment to sanctify the month.

"Lift your eyes to the heavens," He tells them. - What do you see? - The moon... (they answer, with the weariness characteristic of slaves). - Not quite. Once more. What do you see? - The moon! - Excellent. That is better. And once more: what do you see? - A tiny, tiny moon? - Correct. Once more: what do you see? - A thin sliver of the moon at the beginning of the month. And we know that it will grow bigger and bigger. - Wonderful! And again: what do you see? - Perhaps ourselves? We, too, sometimes feel so small, and like the moon, we can grow anew in the future! - That is it. Take it. "This month is yours"! Have you managed to see a familiar natural phenomenon with fresh eyes? Have you asked a new question about something you already knew? Now you are free people!".

This is the secret of life. This is the essence of creation. How wonderful it is to see your child with fresh eyes! To look at your husband anew. At yourself...

Rosh Chodesh is a women's day!

Tradition compares a woman to the moon because of her ability to diminish and grow, and to reflect the reality around her. Knowing this reality, seeing it both in darkness and in light, she can pray for it and for those within it, rather than only for herself. And this prayer has a special power.
