The prohibition against oppressing others (lo tirdeh vo befarech)
27. There is an opinion that it is forbidden to subjugate others, because the Torah says: “And among your brothers, the children of Israel, let no one oppress another.”
If a person knows that asking a friend for even a small, insignificant favor will make the friend feel so obligated that, despite not wanting to fulfill the request, they will be too embarrassed or afraid to refuse, the person must not ask for that favor.
28. One should not ask those close to them or their Jewish subordinates to perform strenuous work, work beyond their strength, or work with no time limit. The time or amount of work must be agreed upon with workers (subordinates) in advance, so that from the outset it seems to them like a standard assignment rather than something impossible and incredibly difficult. Nor may they be given work that no one needs simply to keep them from sitting idle.
